MP-A Ultrasonic Level Transmitter: Non-Contact Level Measurement for Liquids and Solids

MP-A Ultrasonic Level Transmitter: Non-Contact Level Measurement for Liquids and Solids

short description:

The MP-A ultrasonic level transmitter is designed to solve this problem by providing non-contact, stable level measurement based on ultrasonic echo principles.

Level measurement becomes challenging when the medium is corrosive, adhesive, or difficult to access. In these situations, contact-based sensors often introduce maintenance issues or measurement instability.

By eliminating direct contact with the measured medium, the device reduces wear, contamination risks, and maintenance requirements, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial environments where reliability matters more than complexity.

Features:

  • Measure range: 0 ~ 30m;
  • Blind zone:0.35m;
  • Accuracy: 0.5%F.S;
  • Power supply: (14~28) VDC

Introduction

The MP-A level sensor is a compact ultrasonic level transmitter that measures distance and level by analyzing the time-of-flight of ultrasonic pulses. It is designed for both liquid and solid level monitoring in tanks, open channels, and storage vessels.

The instrument supports multiple measurement ranges (such as 5 m, 10 m, and higher optional ranges) and maintains a typical accuracy of ±0.5% FS, ensuring reliable performance in standard industrial applications. A blind zone of approximately 0.35 m must be considered during installation, which is a standard characteristic of ultrasonic measurement systems.

The transmitter outputs process data via a 4–20 mA analog signal and RS485 (Modbus RTU), enabling integration with PLC or SCADA systems. Relay outputs are also available for alarm or control purposes. With low power consumption and IP65 protection, the device is suitable for long-term operation in industrial field conditions.

Working theory

The MP-A level transmitter operates using a time-of-flight ultrasonic measurement method, which follows a simple but reliable physical principle.

The sensor emits high-frequency ultrasonic pulses toward the surface of the material being measured. These sound waves travel through the air, reflect off the surface, and return to the sensor. The device calculates the distance using the travel time of the signal:

Distance = (Sound velocity × Time) / 2

The division by two accounts for the round-trip travel of the signal (emission and reflection).

The measured distance is then converted into a level based on the configured tank or installation geometry. The internal processor continuously updates the output signal and display, ensuring real-time monitoring.

Because the measurement is non-contact, the system remains unaffected by corrosion, viscosity, or contamination, provided that extreme conditions such as heavy vapor or strong turbulence are properly managed.

Key features

The MP-A level sensing tool is designed to balance measurement reliability, installation flexibility, and system integration.

  • Non-Contact Measurement Design: Eliminates direct contact with the medium, reducing maintenance requirements and extending service life.
  • Wide Measurement Range Options: Supports multiple range configurations (e.g., 5 m, 10 m, up to higher optional ranges), making it adaptable to different tank sizes.
  • Stable Accuracy Performance: Provides typical accuracy around ±0.5% FS, suitable for general industrial monitoring tasks.
  • Flexible Output and Communication: Supports 4–20 mA analog output, RS485 Modbus communication, and relay outputs, enabling integration into automation systems.
  • Adjustable Output and Signal Processing: Allows configuration of analog output range and signal parameters to match process requirements.
  • Strong Anti-Interference Capability: Designed with digital signal processing to improve stability in typical industrial environments.
  • Low Power Consumption: Consumes less than 1.5W, supporting energy-efficient continuous operation.

Applications

The MP-A ultrasonic level transmitter is widely used in applications where non-contact measurement improves reliability or reduces maintenance.

Water and wastewater treatment

Level monitoring in tanks, reservoirs, and open basins without sensor fouling in sorts of water and wastewater processing projects.

Chemical storage tanks

Suitable for corrosive or reactive liquids where contact measurement is not preferred.

Bulk solids and material handling

Used for measuring levels in silos, bins, and aggregate storage.

Food and beverage industry

Non-contact design helps avoid contamination in hygienic processes like food and beverage industries.

General industrial tanks and vessels

Provides reliable level monitoring for process control and inventory management.

Ultrasonic measurement is particularly suitable where traditional sensors struggle due to corrosion, viscosity, or accessibility constraints.
